We are ready to start out Laser Frostbiting sailing; everything is in place.
Tidewater Marina in Havre de Grace, Maryland is particularly good venue for frostbiting. We can launch from the floating dock without getting wet. The sailing area is close. The river is the last place to freeze and the first to thaw because the nuclear reactor up stream heats the water a few degrees. We have access to heated restrooms for changing. And restaurants are close for after.
Parking at the marina is likely to be tight, particularly when the store is open and in the spring when people are working on their boats. We may need to park near the Hi & Dry building and walk boats to the launch ramp. We won’t be charged for storage of the RC boat. We won’t be able to store boats at the marina from week to week.
Jim Albert has agreed to do race committee. Jim runs good races, squares courses, and pays attention to the details. He runsraces from his 19 foot Boston Whaler. We plan to do multiple races each day.
For those that are new to frostbiting . . . . Wearing a dry suit is appropriate. In the fall and spring one can often get away with just a wet suit, but a dry suit is generally better for colder air and water.
Wearing a PFD is appropriate with a whistle for signaling for help. Use good judgement about coming in early when one gets too cold or not going out if conditions are not appropriate for you. Our “cold limit” is when the air gets so cold that the lines freeze or when the water freezes.
