PhotoBoat.com took these images of Morning Star (Soverel 27) during the 2010 St. Mary’s College of Maryland Governor’s Cup.  Morning Star was launched just seven days prior to the race and it was the first time in 14 years that she had been sailed.  Her previous owner had her in dry storage for 20 of her 22 years. This was our first time racing Morning Star and the first time raising a headsail or spinnaker.  We finished 6 of 17th in PHRF B.  Plus it was the first time in over 13 years that her crew (Mark Hergan – skipper, Steve Eller – trimmer,  Tom Neff – Pit, Mike Joyce – foredeck) had sailed together.  The last time this group of St. Mary’s College Alum sailed together was in 1997 when we delivered Dr. Charlie McDowell’s Morris 32 Drummer from Bermuda to Norfolk before during and after Hurricane Anna. We could of used a few more 200 pound SMC grads on the final leg up the St. Mary’s River (apparent wind 18+).  Unfortunately, we were overpowered and Sage (J30) made up 20 minutes on us after rounding Point Lookout.

Great Pictures. I have Wild Goose and we have been racing it for 4 years now. Still trying to figure out how to beat J30’s and Tartan tens upwind in more than 12 Knots. It’s a boat that turns heads though. I get constant compliments on it. Glyn
